DTF vs Heat Transfer Printing for T-Shirts, Mugs and Labels
Quick answer: A plain-language comparison of DTF (direct-to-film) and heat transfer printing, and how to choose the right method for garments and mugs. Based in Karachi, Pakistan - delivered worldwide.
Both DTF and heat transfer apply a printed design to an item using heat and pressure. They differ in how the design is made and what they do best.

Heat transfer
In heat transfer printing a design is printed or cut onto a transfer sheet and pressed onto the item with a heat press. It is widely used for T-shirts, mugs, caps and labels, and suits simple to medium-detail designs.
DTF - direct to film
DTF prints the design in full colour onto a special film, coats it with adhesive powder, and then presses it onto the item. It reproduces fine detail and gradients well and works on many fabrics, which makes it popular for detailed logos and photographic artwork.
Choosing between them
For one-colour text or simple logos, heat transfer is often enough. For full-colour artwork, small detail or mixed fabrics, DTF is a strong choice.
